What does an offshore implementation mean and how does it differ from On-site implementation?
In an ideal Offshore Development, the requirement study and design are done onsite using few professionals. The coding part, which requires a large pool of professionals, is out-sourced to a distant geographical (offshore) location.
What are the advantages of "Offshore" over "On-site" implementation?
A major portion of the software development cost is reduced in professional charges. Offshore development can save significant cost to corporations and software companies in the USA, Canada, Japan, European countries, including the UK, and other developed countries. These companies can better utilize domestic resources by delegating programming duties offshore. Recruiting & training costs are also reduced. For time-critical missions, offshore development facilitates the option to double the work force without exceeding allocated budget.
Will it involve many telephone calls from our office?
No. Most of the communications in Offshore Development take place through electronic mail. But, if the client desires, a telephone conference can be arranged between the Offshore Team, Client Manager and Onsite Coordinator at desired frequencies. The telephone conversation will be initiated from the Client’s office.
Will it involve our employee(s) having to visit the offshore development site?
Usually not. But, if necessity arises, we will arrange personal visits during the project development.
Where does the offshore development take place?
It is carried out in our Offshore Development Center in India. STAR Solutions Offshore Development Center is located in Software Technology Park, India.
How do we ensure that the development work is compatible with the existing configuration for our company?
We create a model on our own SAP system and copy the configuration from the customer’s system. This will ensure that the Offshore Team has the exact environment as the customer’s system.
If we decide to change version of SAP during the project implementation, does it affect offshore development?
It will not. We will upgrade to specified requirements of our system and be "in sync" with the customer’s system. There will never be any incompatibility problems.
What facilities/equipment should we have to get our implementation done offshore?
Offshore Development does not require any facilities/equipment at the client’s site. But, the client has to designate a Client Manager who will interact with the Onsite Coordinator for the requirements or sign-offs.
Does STAR Solutions have all the equipment/facilities that are required to get the Offshore development done for our SAP implementation?
Yes. STAR Solutions is fully equipped with all the required resources including the SAP system, Offshore office, communication links, and consultants to execute the Offshore development for SAP implementations.
Does the time difference in the two countries The one where we are located and the other where Offshore development is done - create any problem?
No. Actually the Offshore Development model takes advantage of the time difference providing extended working hours there, helping to enhance rapid implementation.
What is the sequence of events for Offshore Development?
The Offshore Development involves the following steps: Agreement of terms and signing the contract. STAR Solutions will set up an SAP model on the STAR Solutions server and copy the configuration from the Client’s system. STAR Solutions will assign an Offshore Project Manager and the Offshore Team for the project. STAR Solutions will assign the Onsite Coordinator. The SAP Offshore Development begins.
Do People working on Offshore development speak/write good English?
Yes. The official language in the Offshore Development Center is English. STAR Solutions ensures that all the members of Offshore Team have very good communication skills.
How do we track the time reported by individuals working on Offshore project?
The Offshore Project Manager keeps track of the Business Requests that are assigned to the Offshore Team. The Offshore Team members’ time is logged against the Business Requests that they are working on. Each team member will submit a weekly timesheets with the details of the Business Requests that he/she worked on during the week.
How do we ensure quality of Offshore implementation?
The Offshore Development Center follows a Life Cycle Development model to ensure quality and delivery. STAR Solutions has documented quality procedures for the Offshore Development. There are several check points in the Development model including review of Specifications, code, test results which will ensure deliveries meet the stated and unstated requirements of the customer.
Is there any Documentation maintained for Offshore development?
The Offshore Development model relies on proper documentation. Typical documentation generated by our Offshore model includes documentation of requirements, specifications, unit test plans, code reviews, test results, etc.
For documentation purposes, are guidelines followed as they are followed at our location?
STAR Solutions will follow the customer’s guidelines for documentation. If none available, STAR Solutions standard templates will be used for documentation.
Whom do we address for any questions/issues/concerns?
The primary contact for the Offshore Development is the Onsite Coordinator. The customer will address any issues/concerns related to the project with the Onsite Coordinator who will act as a single point of contact.
Will offshore development increase any of our overheads or create a new one?
No. But, the Offshore Methodology requires that a person at the Client’s site be designated as "Client Manager", who will be responsible for reviewing the deliverables and sign-off.
Will Offshore implementation ensure us the timely completion of SAP implementation?
Yes. Even though not guaranteed, since there are so many other factors involved in the SAP implementations, Offshore Development will go a long way in reducing the development lead time of the SAP implementations.
What part of the implementation is handled by the offshore development team?
Currently STAR Solutions is well equipped to handle the complete ABAP/4 development work from the Offshore Development Center in India.
How do we handle remaining part of implementation that is not handled by the offshore project team?
It is difficult to handle the entire SAP implementation from Offshore. The functional configuration requires a lot of interaction with the users. This can be handled on-site by STAR Solutions’ on-site consultants.
Is it a problem having two different implementation teams, one for On-site and other for Offshore?
No. The STAR Solutions On-site coordinator will work closely with the remaining project team especially the Functional Configurators and users and the integration will be seamless.
If our SAP implementation is already being carried out at more than one location, does that create a problem for Offshore Development?
Never, STAR Solutions will assign one or more Onsite Coordinators depending on the size of the project.
Can offshore development be done for our worldwide locations simultaneously?
Yes. The STAR Solutions Offshore Development team can handle multiple locations simultaneously. This will be done either assigning a single Onsite Coordinator gathering, the requirements for all locations, or assigning separate Onsite Coordinators for each location, designed to your company requirement.
